. Shielded workstations for St George’s trauma centre

Bespoke shielded workstations for the new £1.4m resuscitation unit at St George’s Hospital in South West London have been supplied by Wardray Premise.

The new facility provides eight resuscitation bays each with a large bed space to allow emergency care staff to manage the most complex of cases. An overhead X-ray system is built into the ceiling of the department.

Wardray’s brief was to manufacture eight (3.5 metre long x 2 metre high) lead shielded workstations, which also act as privacy screens. The units required 0.5mmPb lead and the wheels are stabilised by large castor brakes. Despite each workstation weighing half a tonne they are surprisingly easy to manoeuvre.

Rachel Gerdes-Hensen, St George’s Hospital capital projects manager, who designed the workstations after consultation with end users,
said: “The workstations had to butt up to a privacy panel that needed to be as deep as the custom made worktop at the rear of the trauma area. Clinical staff advised me of their requirements with regard to shelving and racking and the incorporation of a whiteboard to record information.
I am extremely pleased with the finished product.”

The workstations are a typical example of the Wardray Premise bespoke shielding solution. The company is proud of its 102-year manufacturing history and is determined to continue producing high quality British made products that are built to last.
