The search for the Hand Hygiene Champion of 2012 has now begun. The awards have been instigated by schülke and aim to recognise and reward hand hygiene initiatives. Julie Storr, Vice President of the IPS has confirmed her involvement on the judging panel and this year will be joined by Rose Gallagher Nurse Adviser for Infection Prevention and Control at the Royal College of Nursing and Annette Jeanes, Director of Infection Prevention and Control at University College London Hospitals ( UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust. | University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the first hospital in the country to introduce a holographic ‘Virtual Nurse’ to greet staff and patients on their arrival and remind them about the importance of following good infection control practice. As well as advising staff, patients and visitors about the importance of hand hygiene and cleanliness, the virtual nurse also keeps patients and visitors informed about other trust projects. The Virtual Nurse is just one tactic being used by UCLH to improve awareness of the importance of infection control. Funded by Interserve and provided by The Healthcare Messaging Group, the Virtual Nurse is reflected via high definition video projectors onto a specially developed material which produces a crystal clear image. |

The £110 million emergency care centre at Foresterhill, Aberdeen, one of the most ambitious construction projects undertaken in the north east of Scotland, includes integrated systems comprising: nurse call, staff attack and bedhead trunking provided by Static Systems Group (SSG). In a contract valued at almost £1m, SSG is installing equipment to eight of the floors encompassing A&E, acute medical assessment along with specialist areas such as cardiology, renal, respiratory, oncology, and many more. |

Bespoke shielded workstations for the new £1.4m resuscitation unit at St George’s Hospital in South West London have been supplied by Wardray Premise. The new facility provides eight resuscitation bays each with a large bed space to allow emergency care staff to manage the most complex of cases. Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey, UK, has recently invested in Radiometer’s AQT90 FLEX system for point of care D-dimer testing in its Accident and Emergency Department, where it forms part of a screen to help rule out the presence of venous thromboembolism in at-risk patients. A batch of twelve autoclaves recently left Priorclave’s manufacturing facility in SE London destined for hospitals and health care centres throughout Zambia. They represent the final phased shipment to complete a major order placed with Priorclave earlier this year and have been delivered one month ahead of schedule.
